FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

1) WHERE ARE YOU?

We are located in Andøy Island. It is on 69^oN and is the northernmost municipality of Nordland county. Because of its location under the auroral oval, far above the Artic Circle, Andøy has a greater auroral activity than most other places in the Northern Hemisphere. This gives you a lifetime opportunity to experience the amazing Northern Lights after a day on sea with the whales.

2) WHICH KIND OF BOATS DO YOU HAVE?

We have three ocean going RIB boats (rigid-inflatable boats). You are closer to the surface and closer to the whales, which gives you a unique view of these huge animals at their own level. Our boats have a capacity of 12 each.

3) WHAT TO DO IF I GET SEASICK?

With our boats less than 5% people get seasick, but in case you are not feeling good you should let us know and go to the back of the boat, which is more stable. In average, RIBs reduce the risk of getting sea sick compared to conventional whale watching vessels.

4) HOW LONG DOES THE TRIP LAST?

Whale trip last around 2´30/3 hours, but you should arrive at our reception 30 minutes prior to the scheduled departure.

Bird trip last 1,5/2 hours, but you should arrive at our reception 30 minutes prior to the scheduled departure.

5) WHICH CLOTHES SHOULD I BRING?

Bring warm clothes and proper shoes, as well as gloves. We serve coffee and tea after all the trips. After the whale watching trips we also serve homemade soup and bread. In any case, you will be provided with a special suit that keep you warm and also a life jacket.

6) WHEN AND HOW DO I PAY?

You can pay by cash (Norwegian Crowns NOK) or credit card before we depart to the sea for whale or bird watching.

7) WHAT HAPPENS IF WE DON’T SEE ANY WHALES?

There are always whales here in Andenes but depending on the season you may see different species at different times of the year. We are lucky to have Sperm whales year-round. However, if you are looking to find Orcas or Humpback whales the best time of year to come is during the winter season while they are feeding on the herring.

If it is the case that we cannot find any whales, we will try our best to accommodate you with a follow-up trip free of charge. However, please be aware that this is not  possible during the winter season in Skjervøy due to multiple factors including availability, weather and light conditions. In this circumstance you may avail of your free trip during the summer or low-winter season in Andenes.

8) WHAT KIND OF WHALES DO YOU SEE IN WINTER?

In winter we mainly see Orcas, Humpbacks and Fin whales feeding on the herring. They come around the beginning of January and by mid February they leave, the Orcas come back the first weeks of April. And we have Sperm whales the whole year round (The winter season varies a lot, these statments are based on our past experiences!)

9) WHAT KIND OF WHALES DO YOU SEE IN SUMMER?

In summer we can see Sperm whales, which is the largest toothed whale in the world. There is a chance to see Pilot whales playing around the boat and chasing the waves, as well. Some times if we are lucky we can see other kinds of whales and dolphins, never say never!
