In addition to our regular whale-watching trips, we offer the possibility to snorkel with whales
in winter. In the past years, there has been a change in the migration of the herring which
attracts hundreds of orcas and humpbacks. As we no longer expect to get the herring in
Andfjorden and thus will be seeing fewer orcas during Winter we have changed our location to
Skjervøy in November. If you want to watch these
fascinating whales at close range underwater and get a once-in-a-lifetime experience you, therefore, have to follow us further north. Skjervøy is situated about 160km north of Tromsø.

Because of limited daylight conditions in this period, we do have only one departure time around Christmas and New Year. But from the middle of January onward, there is enough light to have several departures a day.
The procedure of whale snorkel trips
Arrival: Please be at the SeaSafari Brygga (reception and guesthouse) 30 minutes prior to departure.
Reception: Check-in and informative introduction about whales and the sea as well as a safety briefing. When necessary, information is given in different languages (English, Norwegian, German, Dutch, Spanish, and Italian). You will also need to complete a medical disclaimer form before the trip.
Getting ready for the sea: We put on the snorkel equipment that we provide or you can bring your own. Please, wear warm and comfortable woollen or fleece clothes and long underwear e.g. merino.
Boarding: Together we go to the boats, just next to the reception.
Tour: Off we go! Depending on where the whales are, we drive between 10 - 20 minutes to their position. When we approach the whales we do operate very respectfully in their proximity, following our code of conduct for whale-watching. To be able to snorkel we need to find the whales feeding (not travelling or socializing!) and quiet conditions out at sea regarding currents and waves. So the final decision, if we can go into the water is taken out at sea!
The autumn/winter tours last between 2 and 3 hours and take place from November to March (weather-dependent). Please, contact us beforehand for whale watching in October and April.
Back on land: From the harbour, we go back to the reception where we change and during our trip summary you can get more information on the whales you just watched.
We point out, that we offer snorkeling with wild animals in cold arctic waters which may not be suitable for everyone! You should be of good physical health and have prior snorkel experience. Furthermore do we respect special codes of conduct before going into the water. Contact us or read our FAQs.
Minimum age 12 years: In order to participate in a whale snorkel trip children must be at least 12 years old. Adverse sea conditions can result in these age limits being changed prior to the tour departs or during the trip.
Note: Our whale watching trips are weather-dependent. Therefore it is a good idea to add one day or two to your stay, just in case that waves are too high or it is too foggy. Please, contact us or read the FAQs for more information.
